The Filipiniana Section traces its beginnings to the late 1950's when the college library was still located on the upper floor of what is now the Administration Building or Xavier Hall. It was Fr. Robert Suchan, S.J. a fresh Library Science graduate from Columbia University who started the Filipiniana collection.

In 1967, a university library building in the Loyola Heights campus was formally inaugurated to service the library needs of the students of the School of Arts and Sciences. It was named Rizal Library, after our national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal. The Filipiniana collection was then housed in a special room. In 1980, Mr. Rogelio Mallillin took over the stewardship of the library and the aggressive acquisition of Filipiniana materials was pursued. In 1989, an annex to the main building was erected. The expansion led to the acquisitions of more special Filipiniana collections and the present location of the Filipiniana Section.

The growth of the Filipiniana Section of the Rizal Library was in line with the growing interest in local publications and the PAASCU standard for libraries.
