Preserving Gabriel Bernardo's Memory : The Doyen of Philippine Librarianship

The Rizal Library in cooperation with the Ateneo de Manila University Archives presents an exhibit of Prof. Bernardo's personal papers in celebration of his 105 th birth anniversary.

 

GABRIEL A. BERNARDO

(March 14, 1891 – December 5, 1962 )

A lover of books and history, Gabriel A. Bernardo was a pioneer in library science and excelled in diverse fields as teacher, librarian, bibliographer, essayist, writer, and “man of culture”. He was a prime mover in the development of the UP Library as a center of learning and a brainpower in the advancements of bibliography in the Philippines. He headed the UP library and UP Department of Library Science for 30 years.

Professor Bernardo expanded his expertise in other fields such as Philippine, Malayan and Indonesian folklores; Philippine language and literature; paleography; Tagalog literary history and criticism; Philippine music and fine arts; Philippine numismatics; archives and museum and history of the Philippines and Southeast Asia.

He has earned his place in the history of Philippine Librarianship and in the hearts of Filipino librarian and bibliographers. He gave so much of his life to the profession bearing the imprint of his inspired and unselfish leadership, high professional ideals, sense of personal warmth, sense of humor and understanding of human nature.

Gabriel A. Bernardo's achievement did not only greatly enhance librarianship as an academic endeavor and profession, but also, and primarily, made a precious and lasting legacy for librarians not only locally but also globally.
