The Acquisitions Section is responsible in the development and preservation of the print and non-print collection of the Rizal Library in cooperation with the faculty and staff of the Loyola Schools. Activities that are attendant to this function are bibliographic searching, ordering, receiving, accessioning, claiming, recording, and processing of library materials.

  • We encourage all faculty members of the Loyola Schools to recommend books for inclusion to the library's collection, especially those which fall under your areas of specialization. Just fill up a book request slip and have it signed by your department chair, then forward it to the Acquisitions Section.

A. General Objectives:

The Acquisitions Section, as a sub-unit of the university, being a Catholic, Filipino, and Jesuit University, will select and acquire library materials, in coordination with the faculty of the university, that are necessary to support the teaching, research, and community service functions of the Ateneo De Manila University, specifically the Loyola Schools, as defined by its academic thrust.

In line with the university's motto: “Lux in Domino” or “Light in the Lord”, the Acquisitions Section will strive to provide quality library materials that will develop the moral and intellectual values of all the members of the Ateneo community, thereby transforming them into God-Fearing individuals promoting truth and justice for the greater glory of God and greater service to mankind.

B. Specific Objectives

1. To promote the highest level of academic standards by procuring library materials that are necessary to support the curricula of the Loyola Schools in coordination with the faculty and staff of the university.

2. To enable the library to meet national and international standards for an academic library in terms of quantity and quality of the library collection through the selection and acquisition of library materials through purchase, donation/gift, or exchange.

3. To implement a systematic collection development program. This is achieved by maintaining the core collection in each subject area and by continuously updating the same to ensure their relevance and effectiveness in coordination with the faculty, administrator and staff of the Loyola Schools, and also by implementing a regular collection evaluation and weeding program for a well-rounded collection.

4. To enhance the effectiveness of the centralized acquisitions by monitoring all requests for library materials.

5. To help in the preliminary bibliographic control of books in the library by maintaining temporary records until permanent bibliographic control is achieved in the Cataloging Section.

6. To render reference and research services providing answers to bibliographic questions regarding significant or recent acquisitions of the library.

7. To provide current acquisitions list of newly acquired materials.

8. To make and keep different reports pertaining to the acquisitions of library materials, specially reports regarding actual expenditures incurred in purchasing library materials, etc.

9. To monitor the library material expenditures of all the academic departments and also informing them of the status of their library materials budget.

10. To dispose unwanted materials in the most beneficial way by initiating and/or accepting donations, gifts and exchange proposals.

11. To ensure the preservation of library materials through binding and repair.
