Beyond the Bookstacks — Challenges, Issues, Strategies Open to Librarians of Today: Road Map of the Philippine Librarianship

CORAZON M. NERA is the chair of the Philippine Regulatory Board for Librarians. She is well loved by Filipino Librarians because of her passion for training librarians. She instituted an interlibrary loan system at the FAPE library to enable library schools to borrow FAPE materials. She also implemented a library development program which enabled libraries to purchase Filipiniana materials at 50% discount. She was instrumental in increasing the number of MLIS graduates in the Philippines by providing librarians with financial support from FAPE. Her involvement with library associations including financial assistance in their conduct of seminars, workshops and training programs. Her passion for librarianship is demonstrated by her continued support to librarians, and library associations where she has held various positions.

Abstract

The paper presents the mission and vision of libraries, the role of librarians in society, the challenges of the digital age and how they are being addressed. The vision for libraries was made explicit by citing section 2 of RA 9246 (The Philippine Librarianship Act) while the pathways to success were based on the roadmap which is expected to showcase challenges, formulate policies, strategies, and action plans geared towards addressing issues and problems of librarians.
