A Consideration on How Public Library Service Can Contribute to High School Students’ Literacy Development from the Perspective of School Library Practice

HIROKO HONDA obtained her Master of Education (major in Management and Human Resource Development) degree from the University of Sydney in June 2012. She is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of Japan Society of School Library Association, and a teacher at the Hiroshima Prefectural Tadanoumi High School. She received a prestigious award for excellence from the Japan Society of School Library Science. She was also appointed by the Hiroshima Prefectural Board of Education to take charge of the School Library for three years.

Abstract

The focus of this paper is on how public library service can contribute to students’ reading literacy development. By conducting a case study at a public high school in Hiroshima, Japan, this study aims to foster students’ reading literacy skills. The study utilized the YALSA Teen Services Evaluation Tool developed by Young Adult Library Services Association. The study demonstrated how marketing and promotion can add to the enhancement of education activities by a variety of approaches taken in public libraries, like identifying products and services, reaching target markets, branding, fund raising, and planning, marketing and promotion. It also found that public library services play an important role in the development of students’ reading literacy.
