Technical Services Getting Too Technical? : a Filipino's Perspective of an Aussie Experience

Placida Limpin is a Registered Librarian in the Philippines, has worked in various libraries and was actively involved in professional library associations both as organizer and resource person before she and her family migrated to Australia in 2006.

Abstract

This paper aims to: present trends in the delivery of cataloguing services like outsourcing, online acquisition, and RDA; show improvements being made by agencies specifically National Library of Australia to enhance the search experience; introduce advances being developed by library vendors to enhance information discovery; present the growing skills set required of Technical Services Librarians to cope with these advances; enumerate skills Australian employers are looking for from Technical Services Librarians; and to juxtapose the writer's experiences as cataloguer in the Philippines and in Australia and what the Technical Services team at William Angliss are doing, and the implications on Philippine librarianship and library and information science education.

Further, the writer hopes to inspire the participants not so much as to work abroad but to become lifelong learners and develop their skills on their own to benefit their libraries.
