Abstract

Across the globe and disciplinal undertakings, the emergence of the Internet over the last two decade has situated information access and delivery in a context of changes and challenges.  The library, being a conduit of information literacy, has started to rethink and retool its platform to address the increasing demands and expectations of its users. Challenged by the need to make information presentable, complete, cost-effective, reliable, timely, verifiable and accurate, libraries have proactively reshaped its identity by taking advantage of the Internet through the provision and institutionalization of sophisticated online databases to allow users to perform precise and complex searches.  In the Philippines, a number of academic libraries have made online databases available to their users.  This investigation is aimed at establishing a portrait of use patterns of online journals and databases among a select group of university students representing various disciplines.  Based on extensive literature review, a survey was designed to ascertain online journal use, database use, internet efficacy and other library user characteristics.  Data yielded in this study were treated using both descriptive and inferential statistics.  Implications to information literacy program and advocacies of libraries vis-à-vis online resources collection development are also discussed in this paper.
